Nine key frames (Trailer)

Voice - over

Looking at the Trainspotting trailer we took the voice over at the beginning as inspiration for our film trailer.  We thought that it was a good way to introduce the characters and give the audience a bit of information about the trailer.
The breaking of the third wall keeps the audience interested in the trailer and makes them want to watch more.

Taking the idea from transporting we reenacting this in our own trailer we placed a voiceover at the beginning of the trailer to establish characters and a brief background of the group of boys.

However we found that recording a voice over was not as easy as we thought
We had many problems:

Hard to put emotion into a voice over
We struggled to put emotion into the voiceovers, this meant that we had to keep retaking as we didn't think that it fitted the piece.

We didn't take into account the background noise at the beginning, this muffled the voice actor and made the piece seem amateur.

Mistakes, try try and try again!

We solved this problem by borrowing a voice recorder from the music department, recording the audio in a soundproof room where the actor acted while he spoke. The result was the voice over in the final product.

Why use Shorthand?

We were asked 'Why did you use Shorthand?'
the man reasons we used Shorthand was because there was a really click free feel about the website that for us,  who are targeting a stereotypically lazy age group was very important. Shorthand had a large similarity to the Nerve website which we thought was a very effective website.

Theatrical Film Poster

We created two film posters for our trailer, the first was the long shot of ed standing on the pier over the lake. We thought this was a good trailer but didn't reflect our genre and made the movie appear to be social realism compared to the goal of a thriller.

We changed the background photo of the poster to a photo of all the boys walking towards the camera out the door of a large house. we thought this was more effective than the previous poster as it involved more of the actors and made the poster appear as more of a thriller.

Website

We used Shorthand to create our website as we wanted it to flow down the page making it contemporary. A large part of what we wanted our website to be based around was the photos we took during filming the trailer, we found that shorthand allowed us to create a clean cut website whilst ensuring that these photos did not lose any quality. We feel that this will help attract the audience to watch our film and gain a better understanding of the genre, characters and themes throughout.

Make-up

During filming we had to apply makeup to the boys to ensure their features were clear and also to conform to professional standards. For every shot,we applied boys with foundation, foundation powder, contour, mascara, eyebrow gel and lip stain.

On our first day filming we did not apply make up to any of the boys- when looking back at the footage we decided we would re film these sections as they did not seem professional enough.

There were a few of the violent shots that required more extreme make up to make the violence more believable. Here are some examples of us practising the make up effects:

Here are some screenshots of when we used these makeup techniques within our final film.

Minimalistic poster

Draft

We thought that although this poster portrays our idea well, we thought it would be better with more contrast.

Final Poster

The splitting up of the page from light to dark portrayed the battle between light and dark, which is a key part of our film trailer.

Music creation

We decided to attempt to create a piece of music that would reflect the tempo intended in our trailer. We created the music by gathering royalty free sound affects and added them together to create a drum and base feel, which related to the target audience of 15 - 25

Second draft

This is our second draft, it is a large improvement over the last draft but it is still not looking as professional as we would like. W-e have shown it larger audience for feedback, which we will work on to create the final product.

Website ideas

This is the website for Nerve. This was our main inspiration for our own website because we liked the fact that you could scroll down through the pages and we decided that we would try and emulate this.

Click this link to go to the Nerve website

Additionally, because the storyline is set on the upper middle class we decided to look at some private school websites as we felt they could help us to create a believable layout for our own website and help us to choose fonts etc.

Finally we also looked at the website for Fast 8 (the most recent film in the fast and furious series). Once we had done so we decided that we liked the option to find tickets and also the different layout and pages that are found. Thus when we create our website we will be trying to include these features.

Nine key frames

We decided to pick out 9 key frames from our storyboard to sum up our trailer. The shots we have gathered reflect the life the characters lead, the emotional point and the hectic moments in the trailer.

First draft

the first version of our trailer project, it needs major improvement but we are showing to people for advice on how to improve.

Storyboard

We created this storyboard in the initial stages of planning for our trailer project. We followed the majority storyboard, however we found that we had not taken many things into account when looking at storyboarding. This meant that we changed parts of the plot and how we framed many shots.

The storyboard enabled us to understand how we will bring all the shots together to make it a professional looking trailer.

Location thought

Private School- Local private school Summer Hill
Summer hill is the perfect location, here are some shots we took on a scouting day.

The location of summer hill
Due to how close summer hill is we can drive there after school and are able to get all cast members there easy.
Pool Room shots- James' house.
Someones house has a games/ pool room. We took shots when scouting and tested different lighting. We will need artificial extra light for James house.

Car Park Scene- Odeon Car Park
We looked at many different car parks as there are many in the local area. We had to take in consideration lighting, accessibility and safety of the scene. As it is being filmed in the winter and in the evening loss of light is inevitable. So having somewhere with artificial lighting is a must. Such as street lights. The odeon car park is near the cast members and near the station so is easy for cast members to get to.  Need some where private, so passers by aren't distracted and people don't park there. This car park is perfect as it is very quite on weekdays anyway and the part at the top doesn't get used but has a large area for cars. So we don't have to worry about being disturbed or about others disturbing.

Lake scene- Furnace Lake
We needed an open area with a large stretch of water. We also needed to find some where convenient for people to get to. The station is 15 mins away. Here are some shots of the lake.

Teenage suicide

Charlies Story Line,

Suicide rates differ between boys and girls. Girls think about and attempt suicide about twice as often as boys, and tend to attempt suicide by overdosing on drugs or cutting themselves. Yet boys die by suicide about four times as often girls, perhaps because they tend to use more lethal methods, such as firearms, hanging, or jumping from heights.

Most teens interviewed after making a suicide attempt say that they did it because they were trying to escape from a situation that seemed impossible to deal with or to get relief from really bad thoughts or feelings. Like Ethan, they didn't want to die as much as they wanted to escape from what was going on. And at that particular moment dying seemed like the only way out.

Charlie is the shy one in the group, he has been friends with Jack (the Leader) for years and this is why he has been accepted into the group. He is a respectable guy with amazing future prospects with him working hard at school and taking on responsibility such as being a prefect. Charlie doesn't like whats happening to his group and cant handle the pressures of it getting out of hand.

Test shots

We decided to go to locations we would like to film before we began so we could understand where we could place the camera and where the actor should be positioned

Sunday, 1 January 2017

Our Idea

  •  5 boys that go to a private school.
  • They are bored of their life and want to do something to make it more exciting.
  • Due to wealth the locations should be grand and good for the cinematography.
  • Need a method of death for Charlie, but allow it to be easy to access.
  • Locations should be easy for all 5 cast members and 4 crew members to get to. Considering location of all the boys.
  • Charlie kills himself from hanging - need to set up huge fire where he will be killed
  • Subversion from stereotypes by showing emotion from a teenage boy (Charlie)
