Genre in Trailers
Interstella
Camera - The shots in the trailer clearly show the Sci-Fi genre with lots of establishing shots which pay tribute to previous Sci-Fi films, such as Alien (1979) and 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
Editing - Sci-Fi is established very quickly via the interval between cuts being both fast and slow. Sow cuts when introducing the characters this allows the audience to understand them in more depth and fast cuts when something futuristic happens e.g Space craft taking off.
Sound - The sound used in the interstellar trailer echoes other Sci-Fi films such as star wars. This is done by using similar instruments and the high stringed pitch to the soundtrack gives the music an unearthly and extraterrestrial feel to it. The increase in tempo is accompanied by the editing and cinematography which clearly demonstrates the Sci-Fi genre that Christopher Nolan is attempting to explore.
Mise en scene - The Mise en scene, specifically colourisation of shots, is deliberately different between earth and space. Earth's colour palette is very selective, even the costumes that characters wear link to the colours in the background. The greys, browns and discoloured blue gives off a sense that the earth is decaying and dying, this compared to the bright lights that are shown when the crew are travelling through space suggests that they are going to find a new earth or way of life as the colours are much brighter and have more variation to them.
